During good weather (or snow) we have a huge back yard that is privacy fenced that the kids play for hours in and enjoy the swings, slides and climbing structures - not to mention the balls, hula hoops and varied height basketball hoops... Then there's the ride on toys and imaginitive play house, kitchen, laundry along with the dress up clothes, hats and scarves which we bring outside during summer months.

We are licensed providers so we have had our background checks, CPR & 1st Aid Certification (re-certified in November 2009) plus we have been in business for over 10 years and have taken over 40 hours of child development and early childhood education classes.
I am NOT interested in my children being set in front of a TV all day. You must be able to interact with them & be a kid at heart.
We have dogs, so that would be ok. My youngest has not been around many other babies, so he is pretty shy at first, but warms up to you. He is a great child though!! He just wants a lot of attention. OFSN runs a parent support group two times a month, second Tuesday, and last Tuesday of the month. We provide dinner, support/education for the parents, and crafts and activities for the children.

2. If your first contact with this person is from a Craig's List or other internet service ad, once you have e-mailed back and forth a few times & think they might work out - call them. Talking to someone over the phone will allow you to determine if you and the provider 'click'. If you click, that's great! Tell him/her that you will call them back to make an interview appointment once you have decided who to interview. If you don't click, move on to the next e-mail or call.
QUESTIONS TO ASK ON THE PHONE (plan to spend 30 minutes on the phone, maybe longer if you 'click' - this can save you hours of in person interviews so it's worth it!):
* Are you licensed? For in home care, in Oregon, there are 'exempt providers', 'Registered' and 'Certified' Providers. Registered and Certified Providers are licensed with the state which means they have taken some classes, been back ground checked, are CPR & 1st Aid certified and are required to do at least 8 hours of additional training every year or two depending on their licensing.
* Do you have animals? (esp if your child is or could be allergic to any sort of creature)
* Do you smoke? (if they do: do they smoke inside the home? even if they only smoke outside the house will smell of smoke and your child will come home smelling that way)
* Will you help me potty train?
* Are meals included? (some providers are on the Food Program which reimburses them for providing healthy meals so that you don't have to pay or provide them)
* How/when do you expect payment? (some providers only accept cash up front, some providers take DHS payments and will make arrangements for payments of the copay's based on your pay schedule, check with the provider to see if they can accommodate your situation - if they can't this may not be the provider for you)
* Do you have help? (some providers have a family helper - husband, daughter, grandmother, etc. who help out) If they do, are they listed with the Criminal History service that the state provides? Are they CPR & 1st Aid certified? For Registered providers & Certified Providers anyone living in the home over 18yo should be listed with the criminal history data base with the state and listed on the license.
* Do you have a back up provider in case you are sick long-term or go on vacation? Some providers make you fend for yourself and some have someone else backgroudn checked and listed on the license just in case something happens they do have someone who you can have confidence they will also be a 'good' person to watch your child in an emergency.
* How many kids do you have in care on the days I need care & how old are they? (if you have a 3yo that who needs to socialize for then your child being there when there's not other children in care is silly, equally if all the other children are much younger or much older the desired affect will not be acheived)
* Pay attention to how much information the provider volunteers. Providers who are experienced will share stories of past clients and anecdotal things that happen that help you verify that they are indeed childcare providers and will help you determine what kind of discipline they use and how they treat the children without you asking directly. If the provider seems angry or easily upset when you are on the phone, move on to the next, that's red flag that the provider could have an issue with losing their temper.
* Does the provider have children of their own & how long are planning to provide care? The experience of being a parent (no matter what your age) is invaluable in learning how to deal with other people's children. Also ask how old their children are, some providers start doing care when their own children are infants and continue on well after the children are in college - find out this providers story and not only how long they have been doing care but how long they plan to continue. The last thing you want is to chose a provider who may stop soon because her husband's work is moving him to Colorado!
* Does the provider accommodate special needs or diets? There are many children who have special needs like ADHD/ADD, Autism and other behavioral disorders that need special attention. There are also many children who are vegetarian or lactose intolerant - find out if this provider will help you and your family with any special requests you may have.
3. If you post an ad that you need care, DO NOT give out your full name, your children's names, your address or phone number in the ad or in your first response to these people. Also avoid posting photos of your children unless you feel it's absolutely necessary. There's no reason that a provider would need to know what your child looked like before meeting them in person and there's lots of very sick people who cruise the internet that you don't want to have your child's picture or contact info.
4. Once you have e-mailed back and forth AND spoken to 4 or 5 providers on the phone (btw if you can't reach them by phone that's a red flag) choose which 2 or 3 you would like to meet with. Select a couple of days in one week period when you can set aside time to interview and plan on bringing your child along. Any provider who says they don't need to meet your child doesn't know what they are doing (another red flag). You want to do the interviews close together if at all possible so that you can remember the different environments and providers clearly. Take notes if necessary. Some providers have contracts and paperwork they will give to you at the interview that will help be a memory jogger when you get home to differentiate one from another. Those who don't give you that paperwork you will need to take notes so bring a pad of paper and a pen to allow you to do that.
5. Trust your gut. If someone looks good on paper (contracts, etc) but there's something you don't like then that's not the provider for you. You are the parent and the bottom line is that you know your child better than anyone else. You know what they need and what they like - pay attention to how they behave in the interview they will let you know if this is a good spot for them. If they cling to you and won't leave your side (provided this is not how they behave at home) that is a sign that they are not comfortable in this person's home. However, if they losen up and start playing with the toys and other children relatively quickly and maybe even have trouble leaving at the end of the interview that's a great sign that they are comfortable in this space. Children are great judges of character!
Most importantly, be sure you take the time to talk to several providers and find the right provider for your child. This is going to be like part of your family - this person will help you raise your child. Can you picture this provider as part of your life long-term?
Special Needs okay - have several children who are special needs that we provide respite care for and we have openings for more
Special Diets okay - vegetarians, lactose intolerant, peanut allergies, etc. not a problem. I was a nutrition major in college and will work with you to make sure that your child is fed according to their needs. We have 3 vegetarians enrolled currently and 5 lactose intolerant children who drink Rice or Nut milks. We just adapt the whole menu for everyone while they are in care.
Care available 6 days a week! Weekends are okay, we have children Friday through Wednesday and are open to almost any hours (as long as we have openings for your child's age)

Space for an infant on Monday, Wednesday, Friday plus Saturday & Sunday available.
Will accept enrichment care with a minimum 4 hr commitment per week (4 hours in one day)
Flexible hours - long hours avail for nurses/medical staff, etc. who work 10-12 hour shifts
Can also accomodate overnight needs

Please include the age of your child, the day/time you need care and the date you need care to start. This allows me to check availability before calling you back or returning your e-mail. It also allows me to work up your specific rate based on the hours your child would be in care.
Nanny needed for nightime help with newborn. Preferably experienced Nanny in newborn/infant care. First aid, CPR and referances will be a plus.
Need a nanny for help with newborn in the night time for diaper change, feeding bottle milk, taking infant back to bed, body spunging if needed.
This is a short term requirement. Timing 10pm to 9am. It will go anywhere from a week to 2-3 months.
