For your consideration is this American Masterpiece in fine pewter by sculptor Michael Boyett: Texas sculptor Michael Boyett’s magnificent “Flat Out For Red River Station” is a faithful artistic expression of America’s Wild West. A stagecoach has been set upon in the middle of its Santa Fe Trail run from Trinidad, Colorado to Red River Station, New Mexico. The driver whips his team into wild flight while his partner shoots away. Two passengers fire from the coach while a terrified woman sits inside.
Every step was taken to ensure the authenticity of the scene. Boyett worked from drawings of the nine-passenger Concord stagecoach. He pored over old photographs and sketches to make sure the coach, the harnesses and rigging were accurate in every detail. He even studied antique company records and surviving pieces of memorabilia to capture the proper historical atmosphere.
He then created the complete scene in wax – rocky hill, coach, horses and passengers. His incredible skills ranged from fashioning small side steps on the coach to the rifle in the “shotgun’s” hands to the flare of the wildly frightened horses’ nostrils.
When he completed his part of the sculpture, Boyett transferred his masterpiece to the Chilmark foundry. Master Tool Engineer Richard Hazen then created separate molds for over 150 distinct parts. When finally cast into fine pewter, bronze and brass, the parts were reconstructed in the foundry. Sterling silver reins completed the complex project.
The scene is incredibly detailed – the tiny pistol in a passenger’s hand; thin brass railings on the top of the coach; the expression on the driver’s face. Tiny buttons on the woman’s dress are rarely seen because she is hidden inside the dark coach.
Michael Boyett personally signed this magnificent sculpture in 1994, the 10-year anniversary of it’s release. It also comes with the original brochure personally signed by Michael Boyett, Certificate of Registration, Display Title Card, all in the original Chilmark foam padded box.
