Just to be clear, I know my way around a car, but I do not know much about the Model A specifically. So, if I get something wrong it is simply ignorance on my part, not an attempt to misrepresent. End disclaimer.
First, what I do know, because I have inspected the item.
- The hood is in what I would classify as "good" shape
- It is solid and "feels" like it is a heavy gauge sheet metal
- There is minimal rust with no pitting that I noticed
- The four panels (two top and two side) are not dented or damaged (the louvers are in good shape)
- The top hinge is missing the rod that holds the two sides together
- The driver's side hinge between the top and side panel has come apart.
Now the debatable part: Is it 28/29 or 30/31? Is it an original or is it a reproduction?
Based on the research I did the hood is 30/31. This is based on a length at the ridge being 30.5 inches.
As I understand it there are three ways to tell if the hood is original.
1) Is the center hinge rod made of steel or stainless steel.
2) Is the metal a heavier gauge or a lighter gauge? Apparently original hoods were made from 19 gauge steel while reproductions were made from lighter 22 gauge steel.
3) The louver cutouts have a "crisper" look verses reproductions which have a "duller" or more rounded look. Higher quality tooling was used to make the original, therefore the "crisper" appearance.
My verdict:
1) Unknown, missing hinge rod.
2) I do not have a thickness caliper, so I cannot make a measurement. But, the metal is heavy and has little to no flex. I do not have any basis for making a definitive judgement on this, but I think it is the heavier gauge.
3) The louver cutouts appear crisp. But, are they? I do not have anything to compare it to.
So, in my opinion, there is a chance it is original, but you will need to make your own determination.
